Lee County to disband

Seems they are short of cash and have some real cash saving ideas.
"Suggestions on how to trim the budget included eliminating rent payments by having all county offices in county- owned facilities already available, eliminating the use of county vehicles by county employees, and giving all departments a specific amount within available revenue and letting the department heads make the budget cuts for their department. One speaker suggested the county use a "zero budget"? for all departments the way many businesses operate.

Another speaker suggested the county seek help from the state or declare bankruptcy. This speaker also suggested the county hold a special election on the budget and tax increases, a suggestion other speakers later supported.

Another suggested the county dissolve and join Wise and Scott counties, where he claimed budgets are not a problem.

Other speakers attacked the welfare system, services the county provides and others simply said the county should adjust its expenses to its income, not income to expenses. Several called for the county to seize property and sell it for unpaid taxes.

Additional suggestions included cutting all departments 5 percent across the board, selling the airport and unused industrial buildings owned by the county, turning off air conditioning and cable television at the jail, using community service workers to implement a recycling system that would cut garbage disposal costs and generate revenue, or just plain "do without what you can't afford."?

Thank you, we don't need the taxes or the drug problems. Saw some figures the other day on the amount Wise and their neighbors spend on foster child money. Some were 4 or 5 times higher than the next county.

Lee Co. is perhaps the most screwed up county in SW VA. Petty politics at it's finest.

Wise and the rest of the area doesn't suffer from that just as bad, if not worse??? Didn't know that, haha.

Look up the figures for foster families. It shocked me also, it is 4 or 5 to one , and that was the reason the story I saw gave for breaking up the families.
